Purina Layena

Yeah I was thinking about getting crumbles. Thanks for the second opinion. I figured if anything they would appreciate crumbles since they had been on mash all this time. Pellets just seemed too big a jump.

*OH yeah one of my 5 month old ladies already started laying. She started on Sunday with 1 egg at 10am, then Monday with an egg at around 2pm. She took Tuesday off. Wed I checked at 7am and there was the egg, Today Thurs she laid it before I went to check at 9am. So my girl is on a roll. All the eggs are nice, brown and strong. But I do want to start feeding them the layena before my other girls start laying and my one current egg layer is getting all the nutrients she needs to keep blessing me with eggs.

Actually I get the pellets. I have the feeders where you fill them up and they last for a couple of days..and I found that with the crumbles the chickens would get their beaks in there and knock lots of it out. ..and the pellets when knocked out they still ate them. thus making their food last longer..saving me more money and they still lay lots of eggs.

I switched from chick starter directly to Layena Pellets when the pullets were 18 weeks old. The birds switched with no problems. They have been on Layena pellets for several months now. I never see any waste on the floor. Either they are not knocking any onto the floor or they are eating it off the floor as they drop it. I have noticed that each evening there are almost no wood shavings on the floor around the feeder. They push the shavings off to the side. I have to re-spread them nearly every evening. I am using the deep little method about 6" deep. It is a lot of shaving for them to move each day.

I use the crumbles.Tried the pellets and they did not eat them so well.Crumbles are wasted all over the coop though. No major poop issues and still getting 3 eggs a day from my 3 red sex link hens.I also give them some scratch mix and suet with live mealworms. They chase me for the worms!

I pay $12.17 for a 50 lbs bag of the crumbles.

+1, on pellets = a lot less waste of feed

Purina Starter, Flock Raiser and Layena are great. I used a different local brand from a reputable company (sold for the same price) to start my last group of chicks. Even though the protein content was the same the chicks did not do well. Poor quality feathers and did not seem to grow as fast. I had several different breeds in the group so I don't believe it was the individual chicks. I switched back to Purina and within a week a started to see a difference, they all looked really good within a month.

So now I'm sticking with Purina even though I'm not all that happy with the local dealer.
