Purina Layena

I just started my girls on purina layena crumbles. I have 3 girls and only one has started laying. But I am proud to say that she is laying faithfully at 9:30am every morning and she has been doing this for 7 days straight.

We switched from Blue Seal a little over month ago to save a few dollars and have been buying Layena at TSC. The girls love it and are still laying 15-21 eggs a day. We've been using supplemental lighting for added warmth and eggs, though. Important things, the girls are happy and healthy, the eggs are great and we same a few bucks over BS ea. 50 lb bag!

Chickens may ignore pellets initially, but they will start eating it. I've reduced my wasted feed to zero since switching to pellets.

Right now I have my girls and a roo on Flock Raiser and Layena combo. They have done well with it and on crumbles. What I found out is that you do not need to put out alot of feed that you think they will eat thru the day. If the feed bin gets empty, they will find the crumbles and eat that as well. I do not free range my girls and never had any issues with Purina. Rural King feeds are cheaper but more waste and more poop but it will do me in a pinch when I need feed now while I wait for the Purina order to come in.

I have ten girls and one roo, a bag or two would last me a month along with their leftover dinner table scraps.

I've tried pellets a couple of times, it was a waste. They simply refused to eat it for two weeks until they got to the point of cannalism (sp) and egg eating. The bantams do not do well with pellets, had one died from choking on it (maybe she should have some water before eating the pellets). Crumbles all the way!

Now if Purina can keep churning out coupons, we would be buying MORE of it LOL!

I use the Flock Raiser for my turkeys and guineas but my laying hens get 18% layer pellets from a local mill. They are nutritionally very similar to layena but with a bit more protein and about $3 less for each 50 lb bag. Plus my girls love it and lay great eggs. This makes a HUGE difference on the yearly feed expense. Anyone in the Montgomery or Preble County area in Ohio should check out Rowe Feeds for these pellets. My chickens didn't have any problem at all making the adjustment from crumbles to these pellets but they ARE a bit smaller than most pellets. And I seem to have a lot less waste with the pellets as compared to the crumbles.

Started my girls on Layena on the 8th of Jan and they seem to enjoy it just as much as their previous Grow Mash. My 3 RIRs from McMurray have started laying. Today the last one in the bunch blessed me with an egg. So Hilda, Matilda and Agnus are laying. Hilda started at 5 months old, Agnus started at 5 1/2 Months old and Matilda 5 1/2 plus a couple days. So yeah I am super happy got 3 eggs from my 3 girls today all before 10am.
