Purple Peafowl

I got a question. Since I'm going to have IBs, BSs, Whites, and Spaldings. If I get Purples what are the possibilities that I can get through each, Reason why is because for the peachicks that don't sell I will most likely let them go free range. Maybe not the Spaldings since I'm trying to keep Indian blood line pure. Since they will most likely intermix what could I expect walking around.

Eventually you could expect Whites, IB's with and without white flights, BS with and without white flights, and Purple and Purple BS with and without white flights. Any cross with a white will give you colored birds with white flights, cross 2 of those and you can start to get pure whites. You will not get Pieds of any kind unless you start with a bird/s that carry it. As long as the Spaldings are kept out of the mix that should cover it I think.

What do the train feathers look like when they molt compared to an IB. I've seen some photos with the train and they are all faded but do they fade that far

I just got my male, so I haven't any experience with the molted train feathers here. However, I had a friend send me some once from a free ranged Purple male and they were so faded the herl/fringe looked tan, the center of the eye that is bright blue on the IB was a very pretty lavender purple. I am anxious to find out if they fade as much on a bird that is not free ranged. My birds spend a lot of time in the barn during summer, even though they have outdoor runs. The barn has a cement floor and it stays about 10 degrees cooler in there than it is outside during summer. We'll see if the fading is dependent on sun exposure. The swords were the coolest feathers and they seemed to fade less than the eyes.

I read it was because the feather has a weak structure but I didn't quiet understand what that has to do with the color.

Fading does have a great deal to do with sun exposure. My males also tend to stay inside during the summer months and some of them don't fade at all.

Great to know, not that the faded ones are not pretty, but they are such a different color before the fade. I'd love to get some unfaded feathers!

@Garden Peas - good idea, but we would have to get the permission of @q8peafowl .
I know that some of the wonderful birds he posts pictures of belong to one of his friends.
