Our chicks are really doing well down in the Mr. Turtle brooder, but a handful of them (maybe half) have developed purple spots on their shoulders. I fear that this is either due to pecking or that its burning from the heat lamp being too close.

As a precaution I have moved the lamp up higher, if it is pecking, I will have to develop a larger brooder.

The chicks are 14 days old, and just starting to develop tail feathers.

Here is a pic of the purple spots:

I'd really appreciate any help you can give on this!

Of course! Everything new that happens with my chicks- I worry.
It looks to me like a minor injury... maybe someone else will know more though.

All I see are chicks growing out of their baby fluff. Around the wing joints and hip joints, even their keel area will start looking a bit thin and scraggly in that tween stage where they don't have teen feathers covering baby feathers. They'll look ratty again between the teen and adult feather stage. Perhaps there is a bit of bruising on the second chick from bouncing around, but doesn't look there to be anything concerning.

Thanks for the answers guys. The breeder suggested that its likely from some light pecking and to put some blue stuff on them.

About 5 of our birds are bruised in the same spot, I wonder if there is a bully among them and i haven't noticed the behaviour. I have raised up the heat lamp, and may swap it for a red light. Today I am working on the coop, which wil be 4X7' plus nesting boxes. I may set it upp in the garage and move teh chicks into it with a heat lamp just to give them more space.

Thanks again. I'll keep an eye on them, but from what everyone is saying this is not to be worried about, but should be monitored.
