purring chickens

I've seen both the little pullets and the little cockerels do that. I refer to it as sparring, like boxers. I think it is both play and pecking order. Just like sometimes they would squeal before they had even been pecked, and run away from the offending fowl at the same time. Just part of how chickens act. They do stop doing it. It is the fun part of chicken rearing to remember.

mine also used to bang chests and run up to each other all tall-like and have little stare downs... seems like they did it the most around 6-8weeks. pecking order establishment... and they're all hens.

my ee'r purrs in the morning when she's scurrying around finding the black oil sunflower seeds i scatter in the leaves for them. "mmmmmm... these are my favoriteses! mmmmmm.... i LOVE these...."

oh my goodness, i was sitting on the porch one day and i heard my rooster purring and the hen was doing something in the bushes. A little while later, we found she had laid an egg, our first one. I didn't put the two together, purring and egg laying, together until I read this.

Our alpha roo was purring up a storm today! LOL One of the new layers, a mutt, was trying to lay her second egg.... he kept burrowing out a nest for her and she would come sit in it and consider laying her egg (which after an hour she still hadn;t, so I gave up and left...lol) and he would stand by her and purr
