I have a silkie that coos when I am holding her and petting her. reminds me of a cat purring. I was afraid to say she purrs like a cat because it is a differrent sound.

my roo is the only one to growl when he heres something strange the girls just get quiet. i think the growl is a warning for ariel predators and there is a different noise for ground predators i just havnt heard it yet.

I definately know that i heard growling now and not purring. I don't know which one did the growling. But as soon as they did they all stopped and looked up.

I'm still looking for the article from Backyard Poultry magazine that explains the different vocalizations.
I remember it said that not only does the roo have different sounds for aerial vs. ground predators, but different sounds based on what type of ground predator.

Yes, the ground alarm and egg song sounds the same to me. Maybe they don't recognize an egg and have to make an alarm call about it? "Hey that wasn't there when I sat down! What's going on!!!"

I was out with the hose once before I got chickens and one of my neighbor's flock spotted me. She must have thought I was wrestling with a huge snake and she started with the "BWaaaaaak bok bok bok bok Bwaaaaaak bok bok.." and kept going with it until I put the hose away!

No, the egg song is a way of saying to predators "Hey! Follow me! Leave my eggs alone!"

At least that's what I read.
