Putting them out today

I have to disagree. Straw and hay both mold when wet and pose a serious health hazard risk of aspergillosis. (Spelling)

They know that shavings are not food, especially by the time they are 6 weeks old.

I keep chick's on pine shavings from day one and they don't eat them.
Not exactley. My hens still to this day will eat it.

I am new to all this as well, but I'm on my second round of chicks and they have all lived in my house with shavings as bedding. They scratch thru, but even the little bitty ones "spit" it out.

straw and hay is great to use. as long as your coop is off the ground, it shouldn't get wet. What im doing right now is mowing and collecting the dried grass and lining my coop with it. once a week I rake it out and put in fresh! free! clean! no smell. no mold. sweet coop! :)

the important thing is to be sure it's all the way dry before using it :)

They scratch and peck through it, looking for bits of food or bugs that have made it into their bedding, but don't eat the shavings themselves. If yours eat them, makes me wonder if they want more fiber in their diet? Do you let them out on pasture at all?
yes.they will eat them just because mines come out everyday.
