Putting them out today

straw and hay is great to use. as long as your coop is off the ground, it shouldn't get wet. What im doing right now is mowing and collecting the dried grass and lining my coop with it.  once a week I rake it out and put in fresh! free! clean! no smell. no mold. sweet coop! :)

That's brilliant!!!

Also, chicken droppings will not be wet, causing mold. Plus if they were at all wet, they dry quickly. Were did you get that idea? The droppings aren't wet. If it was built up for a year it might be grose but not mold.

How often do you clean the coop?

I concur. Pine shavings seem to work better for me as well. Though I have used both. Pine shavings seem to be easier to clean, are softer and they don't get funky when wet.

My coop is 8 feet wide by 10 feet long. Not huge but not small. There are lots of chicks in there 30. Free range unless it rains. How much I clean depends on the weather and how long Ive left them in versus turning them out. I just clean it when I start seeing dookey on their feet feathers. lol. Seriously though, about twice to once a week. I make the dried cut grass pretty deep wait a few days, pile in new clean dried grass, wait another couple of days, then clean it out and stack the mess around the trees, letting it break down to sweet fertilizer and mulch. If I don't start with moldy grass, I wont have mold in the coop because it will never get wet.
