No, I did not know that DE absorbs moisture and can cause mold! I will try without for sure, thank you!

I can see how condensation may build up in the bottom layer of stone, I thought it would provide a way for air to get up in -but I can see how it could be moist too. Hmm. Will try with no rocks to fill the space, they can reach well into it anyway.

What are the dimensions of that feeder? I really like the looks of it.

it is 2 inch piping and it is about 4ft tall

Maybe off topic but how much feed does it hold? I am looking into making something as opposed to spending $35 for a store bought one.

I've got some 4" piping and fixtures left over from a project, any reason not to use 4"?

Looking at it, I would take the bottom off and put like a planter bottom on it so the feed could push out through the bottom. Chickens could eat out of the sides and bottom. Just a thought....
