Actually... I'd consult the breeder. If the breeder is a responsible breeder (as recommended by the AKC) they should be willing to take the dog back no questions asked.

OP It sounds like the spaying is what set this bad behavior off. It destroyed her confidence and set her back in figuring out the other animals are family.

Honestly what you need to do is instead of seeking multiple advices on here is find you a PROFESSIONAL trainer of Live Stock Guardian dogs and talk to them. May cost you some money, but it will be worth it in the end.

There are hundreds of training methods but with an LGD you have to be careful how you go about it. Different methods work for different dogs, and you need someone who can help you specifically with your dog and her misbehaviors.

Do not leave her unattended with the animals again until you can trust her, do not give her the chance to mess up. This is key - talk to a trainer, and take it VERY slowly. shes still a puppy - she will still be a puppy until shes near 2 years old. So until then she has to be treated as such. You are going to be looking at months of working with her. It is not something thats going to be a quick fix.

Don't loose hope it can be done.

She does absolutly great until I am out of pocket.

As long as I am around she wont touch anything

Put the shock collar on her, (make sure it's working first), then go where she can't see you but you can watch.

As soon as she TOUCHES a bird, give her a shock.

Repeat as needed, but always from a distance so she thinks it's the chicken and not you.

If she has half a brain, you will cure her in less than a week​

I have a pyrenese and she doesn't touch the chickens or the ducks that I used to have. Shock collars don't really work on them as they have very thick fur. It has been said by many people that pyrenese and chickens do NOT get along, maybe because of the jerky movements that makes their predator nature come out. I don't know it has just been said. My pyrenese is right at a year old. When she was younger she liked to jump and run the chickens but since they were in a run I just didn't allow her inside. She would get in the duck pen with me and would try to run them. Now that she is older she doesn't mess with the ducks and comes inside the run. She can go in the chicken run and when I let my chickens out to free range she watches them and will herd them but wont touch them. Maybe she needs to mature. I simply kept letting her know that she couldn't do the bad behavior and now she doesn't. Maybe you need to make sure that if you aren't there that they aren't intermingling. I don't have them freerange with her if I am not around. I just don't think it is in my best interest to try it knowing that dogs are natural predators and chickens are prey.

My understanding is its not advisable to use a shock collar on a LGD dog you want to guard chickens. IF you decide to use a shock collar, you will HAVE to shave the collar area of the dog so the shocker can make contact with skin. - an LGD needs to see the flock of birds as FAMILY/PACK - not an avoidance, you want them to be able to sit in the flock and be part of it, not avoid them like the plague like your method is going to do to a young dog.

I am keeping her locked down unless present. The deal really is that she was great with every critter and was even in the aviary with chickens, ducks and turkey most of her life here. This honestly only started about a month after having her spayed so am leaning hard on another breeders advice that this may be what changed her attitude toward the birds. I will keep evryone posted as to how this works out. Like I said before I really love this dog and desperatly want to fix this.

I have a newfie/pyrenes mix and he is a Nightmare with my chickens, will kill one in a heartbeat. I hate to say it But your girl is not going to stop, once they will kill the critters they dont stop. Dont let some trainer or trainer wannabe tell you diff. I went every route and mine cant be stopped and from what I have learned they cant be told to just leave them alone once they have it in em, she cant help herself. I would never get rid of my dog so I just have to make changes so that he doesnt get the opportunity to get them and despite that, he got one yesterday, UGH

Mine killed plenty of birds as a pup.. she learned they are family.. so there is always hope for a LGD to change and accept that the birds are family and not toys
