Pyxis' Emu Chat Thread

So questions for all the emu owners here. Do you vaccinate them? Is there any difference in testing with them if you are NPIP or do they get a pass due to the species? (Imagines doing a throat swab on an emu in fear). Are they susceptible to typical poultry type diseases? Avian influenza and such?

Yes they are prone to most poultry diseases but I read some place that there are no know cases of them carrying Meraks.

That's false, in NY they do get tested but cant be tested til a year old. My agricultural department is testing mine next year.

The person who does my NPIP specifically told me they don't test them

So I guess mine won't get tested, since she's the one who'll be doing my testing next year too.

Well, Berrigan's vaccination went off without a hitch. I distracted him with collard greens and then stuck him. He didn't even flinch at the needle going in. He tried to move away a bit as I injected it, probably not crazy about the feeling of the cold liquid going in, but it was done before he knew it.

Ciara will probably just sit on my lap when I do hers next week.
