Pyxis' Emu Chat Thread

Not yet, the snow has made it impossible to do outside projects. The pen will also be the run for my brahmas, so I would have been putting it up either way at least, lol, and it's not something I have to do only for the emus. Just gonna use taller fence than I would have otherwise.

Our yard is a mess. It’s cold and muddy and miserable. Today it was sunny and reasonably warm, but the winds were dangerous (falling branches).

How tall does your fence need to be? I have a 6ft fence around my chickens now, no roof over the run, I have nice tree cover that hides the chickens from flying predators.

Actually.....the ACs and olive eggers I got from you roost in the trees instead of going in the coop.

Ask them nicely?

Are you going to try and set up a video recorder in case you aren’t home? Maybe one of those fancy baby monitors?

Actually yes :)

At least five feet. I'm going to do either five or six. Six would be a total pain to put up since it would be taller than me and the gate would be a nightmare to deal with I'm sure.

My gate isn’t as tall as my fence, if that makes sense. It’s more like a door. But I don’t think my fence is strong enough for an emu.

I like how you did that! Mine won't have the bottom board like yours does though so a door wouldn't really have any support which would make it hard. I could consider sinking some boards for a frame like you have and cementing them into the ground.

You actually want a little give in the fence with emus because they get running and playing and then bounce themselves off the fence, silly things, so you don't want it solid enough that they hurt themselves doing it.

That’s really interesting! I’m learning a lot about emus now. I think my fence would bounce back, assuming they didn’t bowl it over.

The post holding the door is reinforced with the boards across the top as well. The door had to open that way so it would naturally fall shut behind me

I have the boards sunk a bit into the ground, more in some places as my run goes up a hill and the ground is all uneven. The front side of the run, the most visible side, has several boards stacked now. Not for stability or predator proofing or anything like that - but because I use wood chips in that part of the run and I was tired of the chickens kicking the chips into the grass. It looks nice too.
