Pyxis' Emu Chat Thread

https://i.imgur.com/GRWBfj9.mp4 -- whooo! Footage-of-spazzy-dance project underway. Got a fifteen-second clip that I can't upload. But it has actual spazzy dancing. This is the crazy running part, some seconds later.

'females sometimes start a second breeding season'

Very interesting article on parentage(or high levels of cuckoldry and intra species parasitism) in emu nests.

OMG OMG!! If I do a little dance, they do a little dance
I love the way their feathers move like a thick pelt of fur!

Fig season!

Can't see anything, but can hear a big-voiced wild female 'operating' against the home team, whom I think are a bit out of their depth

Edit: you can see the the bird to the right of the home team is not their concern. They are focussed on the female somewhere ahead and to the right of them -- the one whose boom suggests she's a major player. But this is unique: first footage of wild emus 'operating' against each other. Note how the wild bird is skirting the house-clearing:

been feel pretty down at the possibility of any of my emu eggs hatching. day 39 no wiggle etc.... but i bought these "sketchy" fertile guinea hen eggs a while ago. only 5 outta 12 even candled but i came in at lunch and one hatched. couldn't figure out what was peeping. won't say i've been neglectful of these eggs but the emu get 10x the attention. so cautiously optimistic

Congrats on the guinea hatch! Hope you end up with more :)

it is starting to look like the eggs i purchased the farm auction, were not in fact guinea hen eggs. it is more likely they are bantam chicken eggs. this explains the 20 day incubation. so good news / bad news. good news i can hatch a chicken, which i already knew. bad news it's a bantam. It's days like this, when i wish still had my alligator .
