Planet Rothschildi

Tooshtoosh, now a male in his fourth year, is taxing half-grown 'early' plums. It's the 12th year I've had the privilege of watching Eric and his family doing this.

But the thread is now slender.

Limpychick and Tooshtoosh are likely the only two of Eric's chicks I can identify. I was recently shocked to realise that the 'original chicks,' Eric's 2008 clutch, are now old. Felicity has failed for a second spring to turn up to eat The Yellow Flowers she loves: we gotta accept that she may be dead.
And Number One has not visited for over two years: ditto.

And Uno Chick (much younger) has also not been sighted for several years.

So it all really pivots upon Limpychick, as it's the males who might bring their chicks -- Eric's grandkids -- here for plums in spring, and figs in autumn.

Watch this space.

Discussions about space and aggression? Here is a classical model:

first light. Tooshtoosh and Mrs Tooshtoosh having their wheat; wild emu enters clearing; heads straight for the wheat (?); gets driven off by Mrs T.

Note the Lookin'-On Thang by T. himself. Got this hilarious unconcerned look on his face.

The point though, guys, is that the home team drive an intruder off fifty yards or more within literally seconds.

[Saw four mustang ponies down behind the house yesterday! The logging here is somehow on pause. And the wild horses have returned to the nice little pasture they frequented before.]

I've been following this thread for a while, only just getting the chance to comment now..
Quite the adventure so far!
And now beautiful blonde emus! Looking forward to seeing more pictures of them!

When Mrs. Tooshtoosh first got here, she was a little hoity toity about the comestibles -- not like Tooshtoosh, who lopes into action at the first sign of Yummy wheat. But Mrs. T. would sorta mosey over.
Not any more! Chopped apples. She loves chopped apples. And now both of them spring hungrily into action when I turn up with chopped apples.

All three emus got out the other day, oy. We had a big wind storm and a tree came down on my fence, and out they went. Luckily, the neighbors spotted them and actually rounded them up into their duck pen. The duck pen only has fencing about three feet high, so they were only staying in there because they didn't really want to be out, lol.

I got the fence fixed, and then had all three follow me back across the road and across my property into their pen, with my neighbor walking behind in case any of them wandered. But they all followed me right over and in.

My neighbor was a bit intimidated by Ciara, haha. He thought it was funny when I told him she was a sweetheart and not to worry, but it's the truth, she's a good girl.

Meanwhile I'm watching Crikey It's the Irwins and watching them try to load an emu into a horse trailer to take it out to release it, and they're having a bit of a hard time. Thank goodness mine are so tame and will follow me, lol.

Yikes! It's good to have bird friendly neighbors. I can't imagine the chaos that would have resulted had they wandered far and run amok around the neighborhood LOL I'm glad they are ok.

I saw that episode of the Irwins. They sure milked that one for the camera. That lil emu wasn't big enough to be too scary :D
