The 'chicks' found some spilt wheat in the car port.

So, as best as I can figure it out, there is one adult here -- LimpyChick the female -- and the closer birds are Tooshtoosh's four chicks, and the birds trying to help themselves are a clutch of five wild chicks in their second spring -- same condition as Tooshtoosh's chicks.

See the head at the back? That's a wild emu. It's been slippin' about for a few days. But this morning snuck right up to get a bit of wheat

The first plums are falling, and for the fourteenth year, it is Eric's family holding sway.

I hope so! And this time I think I caught it before it actually froze, so it's likely bound for the incubator.

We have 'Gurk.;

The 'chicks' turned up. Had a brisk dawn dance. And in the middle of it, the smallest chick uttered a 'Gurk.' A proto-gurk. No real power in it. But it's a marker:

chicks stops cheeping at about a year; are quite silent for some months; and we have a 15-month old male gurking.

Both good news and bad news today.

Good news: Ciara laid another egg! And it was intact and normal, so we are ahead of last year.

Bad news: She laid it in the middle of the pasture and I found it buried under snow, so it likely froze.

I have left it in the barn in hopes of tempting her to lay her next egg in there.

The 15-motn-old male was practising his gurk again yesterday
