Quail Basics

start here------>https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=282488

Feed them GOOD GAME BIRD feed, keep their pen clean, and keep them AWAY from other types of poultry. 1 rooster to 3-4 hens ratio in the cages, if one gets injured, get it out until it heels up!

Coturnix quail is the layers in quail.. they hatch in 17 days.. start laying in 5-8 weeks.

Any new bird you bring in, keep it away from your flock for a full 30 days.. If it shows any sign of sickness, get rid of it! If you have chickens or other types of poultry, feed the quail first! Never use feed trays, scoops, waterers, or anything else that chickens has used in the past for your quail unless it has been bleached and air dried for a day or two.. This includes gloves used to handle them also!

If you do all this and then some, you shouldn't have much problems with disease, but if you do.. post pics and symptoms and we'll try to help..

I remember a post by JJMR that has some good information on diseases.. might use the search function to find it

Good Answer!!

I have my chickens running aroud the quail pens and the feeders i am using were used in the past as chicken feeders... I have had no problems with my birds getting sick it just depends on the person i think. Some people swear the chickens will get them sick but there are some people that have their quail and chickens running together... so that is pretty much up to you. Coturnix are the easiest to take care of I think i had not had any problems with them but a few friends of mine raise bob whites and button and they have problems all the time with them. But if you do have questions post it on here and you will get a lot of answers that are helpful and some that aren't just go with your gut and you will be fine!

If you want to have your quail running around with ticking time bombs, thats your choice!! After you have to start over once (or twice for the real hard headed non believers) You too will advise against doing this.. If you notice, most that advise not to have them around chickens has raised birds for years. They learned this the hard way and try to keep others from making that same mistake!

I learned it the hard way back 18 years or so ago.. not once, but twice as I was one of the hard heads that said the chickens wasn't the cause of it the first time!!

OH YEE OF LITTLE FAITH....

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=250361

I read this thread a while back, changed my mind about things.
personally, we went through CRD (chronic resp. disease) with chickens out at the farm, (new chickens) we saved some, culled some, medicated all for weeks. do not plan to breed the ones it hit that we saved.
now we know we have carriers in the "mongrel horde" that has lived there for 60 years, etc. that hit the new chickens when they came in. meaning- your chickens may look fine, they may have an immunity, others will not.

when thinking about Quail, I read the above post and made a decision. now the chickens are at the farm, Quail are in my backyard or my mom's acreage., and we practice decent bio-security, in as much as we can control...
i.e., my truck goes both places, but my shoes do not. not saying its perfect.

back to the above thread, in my humble opinion, you don't want your Quail to go through CRD, it will be ugly.

Find a friend with acreage, or another backyard to separate your Quail or Chickens, if you really want to enjoy them.

Personally, I enjoy the Quail more in suburbia than I would the Chickens, mine are quieter and the waste is a little more manageable with same amount of birds.

Best of Luck. TD

ha well i guess i am one with a hard head because i have not lost a single bird. But then again non of my chickens are sick and if they do they are gone so maybe thats why i have not had any problems but there are people out there that have raised them together for years and have not had any problems so i think it still goes both ways

I dont have them roosting together or anything but the chickens still run around... best of luck !!

I can't prove it but I think it is worse in wet climates, my chickens and quail are about 50-75 feet apart and the prevailing wind here blows from the quail to the chickens
