Quail Cage Cleaning Frequency - HELP!

I’m starting to understand the addiction of these birds! No worries on the misunderstanding, I’m not taking it personal at all.

I love quail eggs/meat but it’s hard to find or expensive where we live. I thought about a small flock just for our family and we can have it as often as we’d like without having to drive far distances.

Initially, my husband and I looked up plans for quail cages and we found the images on Pinterest. Then I started seeing some good reviews on it on FB so I took a quick look, showed it to the hubs and he said go ahead and put it on the list if it’s easy to manage. So I did, but I didn’t expect it at all! Unfortunately, it was purchased before Xmas so no, I can’t return it now so we can make the best of what we have for now. I didn’t have any intention of having a large convey but enough for my family and I to have eggs and some meat in the fryer from time to time so I didn’t think to look at capacity or anything but when we put the cage together, I had all kinds of questions! Then the chicks hatched and I had more questions, then I started cleaning bird poop every other day, then every day and I had more questions! One thing led to another as the birds got bigger, the questions rolled through my head, and we thought of removing the partitions, especially with health, cleaning and sanitation. I’m literally learning every minute of every day with my little batch of fluffs that I feel like I’m study avian science in college! But it’s been great! So glad I’m getting some feedback! Thank you all!

Take the partitions out and it might be good for 4 adult quail.
1 male and three girls.

I highly recommend building a couple of homemade cages.

Maybe you can use this Christmas gift for a hamster.

If you think you might want to raise your quail on the ground, you might take a look at these. I have two of them with 8 birds each in them. You might be able to put a couple more in, but 8 give plenty of space for plants, boxes to hide in, and the food/waterers.

Thank you! We looked at those previously also. Unfortunately, we can’t have those either...it’s considered “an outbuilding” in our hood. It kind of sucks living so close a large city.

Not sure the hamster comment was necessary but ok. I get it, you’re not too fond of the cage and your dismay is coming through LOUD AND CLEAR! Yes, it was a gift. I feel that it was the thought that counts and could never be so crass as to say something like that to anyone who gives me a gift. BUT that’s me. Not a fan of rodents either! Thank you for your input, it was appreciated. 🙂

Anyhow,
Unfortunately I do not know what I have just yet. I know I have at least 3 females so far, maybe 3 males but the others are not feather sexable and no one has crowed. I’m sure I’ll find out soon enough! I’m so excited to see what they turn out to be since I’ve been watching them, I can see all of the different personalities!

Thanks everyone for your insights! It was truly helpful!

I apologize for any ugliness.
I thank you for bringing my attention to these cages though...I'm going to have to start a thread about just how insane the false advertising is on them so others don't end up in your situation.

Thank you for your apology. I appreciate it. I completely understand your frustration though. I hope your advocacy against these cages are successful! 👌🏼

I would be interested to see your birds in the cage....I completely understand the challenges of city ordinances. upon further inspection of the unit, it appears that you could keep 2-4 per section of cage depending on the size and personality of each individual.
