Quail cuddle puddles

Pics
I had 19 last time and they were gross! I put them outside at 3.5 weeks I think, because it was colder. The next hatch was supposed to be less eggs but I ended up putting 15 in the incubator, And all are developing, I may have a ton again, but they will get put out at maybe 3 weeks because it’s so warm, strugglers may get a couple extra days inside.
The side door is a brilliant idea! It makes sense. I had 45 or so in my last hatch and they swarmed me when I'd clean the brooder, but I spent a LOT of time with them. Now, out in their big coop, I come in from the side and they try to hop out the door or into the front of my shirt! They were 4 weeks old when I put them out. You are right about stinky and gross!

Wow 45! I had planned this hatch would be like 8-10, next would be the same, then breed some of those together and set 8-10 again. I thought 19 was too many to tame properly, and hoped for about 6 lol. 45 chicks must be insane haha. If all 15 of mine hatch I may try to sell some day olds if I can, we also invite our extra quail to bbqs from time to time, so I guess time will tell.

On an interesting note, I watched a video of “ancient Chinese techniques to guarantee a hatch of all females” or some other snake oil title, but I decided to try it, and of the breeders’ eggs I separated the 10 most “female” looking eggs (rounder with no point on top) and I have 5 eggs that look “male” but they are totally smoothe and matte looking like little blue chicken eggs, I’d like to propagate the further production of those pretty eggs so I set some. I’ll see if this nonsense turns out to be true.

It's not. Believe me, if breeders could tell the gender of eggs before they hatched, there wouldn't be nearly as many extra roos out there and they would sell guaranteed hen eggs.

Edit: Also, if you check, you can find that the research has already been done.

I don’t doubt that it’s hooey haha, I watched the video with my kids, they are in 1st and 2nd grade. I was telling them about the scientific method and how this person just made a video saying this was a fact, but didn’t put forth any real evidence. Just a guy talking and sorting eggs, without even videos of the hatch saying that he got all the females. I told them look at the comments and see if anyone else said they tried it and it worked etc. so I declared it was fake, but my daughter thought we should do our own experiment, so that’s how this happened haha. I hadn’t even mentioned it on my new hatch thread, it’s just a silly little thing to do in lockdown I guess.

Does this fit the definition of a cuddle puddle? IMG_20200725_152711.jpg
They love to take a nap in my hands😻😻

Those little floofs are outrageously cute!
It looks like they're outside. How did you find a way to keep the space hot enough for them while they're so young? I have a similar ground-dwelling flock, with some grass, so hoping to pick your brain about heating strategies.
We live in a desert area so it is quite hot during the day. So I need not keep them in the brooder. At night it gets very cold so I put them in the brooder.I always cover them with something like a basket to avoid crows or magpies. And i let them roam free under my supervision.
