Quail egg swap

when i was whining earlier this month that i wanted some buttons..poultrykeeper pm'd me and said he would get some and incubate them for me....he just pm'd me yesterday, and told me they are on day 3 i think...there are 40 of them(i believe)..so, if the hatch goes well, we are probably going to split it...to bad you guys live so far away...i should have about 20 buttons soon...
HypnoSteve...you are in NJ?..thats not to far from me....like 2 hours maybe?.....if you or anyone else wants i can meet them and pass some of them on to them..

Redhen,

Are they settling down at all for you? I tried holding them daily but
they still were nutty.

The most calm quail we had was our first male. He was a Coturnix
who lived in our living room alone and got lots of attention.

Since you mention it --

I've been very surprised by how calm my quail are. I don't hold them unless I'm doing something to them, but I do move slowly around them. They hardly step out of my way so I can put their dishes down.

I would think your nature and experience with animals is 80% of the
reason yours' are calm. Animals have a 6th sense.

I've found that my quail will warm up to me if I'm calm, make slow
movements, and let them get used to my presence before handling
them.

I think they're just hoping I'll set down a fresh dust bath.

edited to add -- but seriously, I have often found that if animals (of whatever species) are nervous, it is often because their enclosure is too small. Animals will feel more secure if they have more space to move in, so if you (general you) have nervous birds I'd suggest a bigger tank/cage for them.

I currently have 10 quail (mixed sex) on the floor of a flight cage that measures roughly 4 feet x 3 feet, plus two obnoxious males in a separate cage. And these guys would probably appreciate even more room. The more, the better!
