As for potbellies in the house several people do it actually they are really smart and can potty train just like dogs (which is good cuz pig poo stinks) LOL! As long as i could teach it to potty train, and not root up my carpets, and teach it to get in the shower for a bath every now and then without protest (that'd be a hard one pigs love to protest lmao) I think it'd be fine. I'd want a bigger home for that though.

I also want a flemish giant in the house and name him "Tiny" i could get one anyday, but i want a flemie in my first home..nto here main reason being my mom would kick my bum! LOL!

edited to add if everyone knew every animal i plan/want to get when we finanlly get our first home...they'd probably think i was a lunatic ..maybe i aaaamm...

Hi guys..i keep mine in the house..and they use a litter box(a dog litter box with pine shavings in it)..they were easier to train than a kitten..its their natural instinct to go in one spot..and to be clean(just like a cat)...Shelly...if you are feeding your guy regular hog food..dont go by what i say for feeding..the feed requirement is differant..i only know about pot belly food...sorry....here are my guys...actually...if you have dogs in your house....why not have a pig?..they are cleaner..dont shed..AND dont get fleas..

Aww!!

How cute is that?? He is a lot smaller than mine is, Horton was taller when I got him. The 5 week pic he is standing by a 2x6, so he was about 6 inches tall then. But he is a fatty!!
I will get the potbelly feed, the guy at the feed store said that most people just get regular feed for them, and since it was cheaper, and he hasn't steered me wrong in the past, I went with what he said. Well, I should have thought that most people here are married to their cousin, or dating their mom or whatever (

), so I maybe shouldn't go by what the other people do around here!

I haven't taken him to the vet yet. Kinda broke right now! So I don't know how much he weighs. He does look a bit chubbier than he should, but that's probably cause I was feeding him too much! When I get my disbursement from my financial aid I will get him the right food. We are supposed to be getting regular meat hogs next spring, so if there is any feed left it can be saved for them. Or I'm sure the chickens would eat it!!

They are part pig anyway!

I live with my dad atm, and he has 10 acres. Unfortunately, most of it is for the silly horses!
But 100 feet of their pasture is MINE next spring!! That is the only good place to put a flight pen for the bobwhites and chukars I'm getting!

redhen---What do you think of Horton? Does he look pure to you? I noticed he has a longer snout than your little one. So he is probably mixed somewhere right? The guy I got him from said the mama was only about 40#, but that's not saying much. My SIL had one in the house that was smaller than her cats!! She was told by the breeder to more or less starve the poor thing to keep it small. Silly people!

Hey Shelly!... your baby is cute also!..i forgot to mention that in my post!..he actually looks alot like dyson..and i love the socks on him!..and i love his name!..just to cute!..ooh..i'm sure that the hog feed wont kill him ..when we got dyson they were feeding him sweet goat feed..and cracked corn(which he STILL loves!)...lol..and he was okay..our pot belly food costs $15 for a 25 pound bag...it used to last a long time ..till i got the 2nd pig!..but..with 1 cup a day(for 1 pig)..it will last you a long time..i know about not beng able to afford it!..trust me!..my hubby is on un-employment..we are hurting also..
sad.png
...so, whatever you can afford to feed him is okay..i just wanted to tell you that i dont know how much of the hog food to feed him(cause i use the pot belly)....but it IS made to get them fat...so..LOL... i want to try a feed hog also sometime..i just wont be able to go near him at all!..or i'll have another stinkin pet pig!..
gig.gif
.....now..for taming him out..remember what i said?...try to go sit in his pen...have a yummy treat...and he WILL eventually come to you to get the treat...dont move fast..just let him come to you...then once he takes the food from your hand....do that a few times..then...put a treat on your lap..and make him come to you to get it..he will....and soon he will be climbing on your lap!.they are pigs!..and will do anything for food...lol..Dyson was so wild when i got him...he wouldnt even eat at all for us...would run like crazy if we went even near his pen...with in a few days of me sitting in his pen with him and moving slow..he came to me...but..he still is timid with us...but..he comes to us when we call him now... you train him like a dog...call his name....when he comes..give him the treat..just keep doing it..it will work...i have a bag of treats(old popcorn,crackers..etc..)..that i shake..they KNOW that noise..and always come running..you can tame him out..let me know if you have any questions...good luck!, Wendy

Hi..ahh!..
barnie.gif
..i wish people understood that starving them dosent keep them small..it just starves them!..lol..(it gets me mad!.alot of them are starved for that reason)...even i feel bad sometimes about the 1 cup a day thing..but all the pig experts say..that is what to feed them..for life....
idunno.gif
..and i did try to bump up hammies feed last spring..and he got fat like real fast(it was weird)..so, i just stick to what they say....
Horton(i LOVE that name!)..he looks pretty pure to me....if you look at Hammies snout..his is pretty long also....you see there are pure Vietnam pot belly's(which dyson is supposed to be).then there are regular pot belly's...like Hammie..(the mixed color ones)...so, its hard to say..because they mix other breeds with the vietnam pigs to get the differant color ones....but, yours looks pretty pure to me....Hammie is also pretty tall(not like dysons parents were..they were alot shorter )....also..did you know(i saw this on discovery channel..they had a show on pigs).that pigs are the only animal that can change its skull and snout shape in ITS life time....say you have a domestic food hog....their snouts are pretty short...and then you have a wild boar..their snouts are longer (for foraging and rooting in the wild)...now...IF a domestic hog gets loose and goes wild..its snout WILL change so it can forage in the wild..AND visa versa..a wild hogs will shorten if its put in capitivity....that freaked me out!..i thought it was pretty cool!...but, to me, your guy looks pure...but i dont know how big he is now....do, you have any recent pics?...Wendy...p.s.,.i will post a pic to show hammies snout better...because Hammies snout it looks longer also...
