I hadn't thought to grind up my oyster shell...thanks for mentioning that! I use BAR-ALE's oyster shell. Do you think that's small enough? When they were chicks, I crushed up their feed with a wooden mojito muddler (left over from before I quit drinking)....but I doubt that would get the job done on oyster shell, because it's tougher. What do you use to grind oyster shell?@Tree29 Instead of starting new threads for each of your questions, you might want to consolidate into one thread in the future.
Laying quail can have 18-24% protein feed, but should have 3.5% calcium. If the feed doesn't have the calcium in it, you can give egg shell or oyster shell on the side. Make sure that the oyster shell is ground fine enough for quail to eat easily.
If you have time, you may want to read the Quail Hatch Along thread. It's long, but it has a wealth of information in it.

I have to crush their oyster shell up some. I got a stainless steel mortar and pestle for Christmas, and it is fantastic for breaking up oyster shell.I hadn't thought to grind up my oyster shell...thanks for mentioning that! If you offer it on the side, they'll eat as much as they need.If I get a feed for standard coturnix layers that is maximum 1.5% calcium, how much crushed up egg shells do I need to add to 40 grams of feed?
