Looking at the pic again, it looks more as if it's a "bash wound" or the feathers worn down from hitting the mesh. The back feathers are from the other birds pacing on him.

Some suggestions - move to a larger aviary, add some natural items in the aviary to keep them busy. Here's some ideas from gbwf -

Quail love to pick and scratch. Wire cages don't offer this activity and does not allow the birds to behave naturally. If you cannot provide a ground contact aviary, place a tub or something that you can plant in or place material in to give them a better quality of life.

Plants provide natural cover and activity.

Another ground bird doing what ground birds do.

Good Luck!!

I have read through all 11 pages, and have not seen anything regarding the texas A&M white cortunix? I got some off ebay yesterday, that should be here in the week. I googled it, and it said that they were bred so they have bigger breast, with white meat. Anyone know how big these birds get? This will be my first time with quail, so idk if I'll even get 'birds' from it. I read so many things about different types of quail, I've probably gotten confused.

I had some but they didn't appear any bigger than the regular coturnix to me and everything picked on them. I didn't have a good experience with them but they were my first quail also so it may have had something to do with it.

THank you. I have never had any problems with my coturnix but they are a more tame bird. I will try a ground pen for the giants because they do seem more wild. I had some coturnix in my duck pen for a while with no problems. Do you think I could put the giants in with the ducks or should I make them a flight pen?

Hi, I'm so glad I found this thread. When I bought my HB Genesis w/ turner we got 30 free quail eggs. They're white, so I'm guessing they much be bobwhite eggs since cortunix are speckled? Those are the two types the manufacturer sells on their site, and if they sent paperwork saying what kind of eggs they sent, I haven't seen it.

So I'm wondering with bobwhites, how much space per bird do they need? If I separated off a section of the chicken run just for them, how much weather protection do they need compared to chickens? At what point are they considered 'adult' enough to put out in a run? I've been thinking about getting a bird cage so I can keep them inside to watch them this winter, and maybe keep a few pair year round, but do they produce as much dust as chickens (cause my chicks are still inside, and the room I put them in is so incredibly covered in dust!).

Only 18 eggs went into the bator out of 30 because the rest were damaged in shipping (a company that ships quail eggs all the time ought to have better packaging practices imho). I haven't candled yet, as it's only been a couple of days since I put them in the bator. When they're a week along, I'll take a look. Still, I need to make some kind of arrangements for brooding and housing them eventually. Nonmedicated game bird starter/grower ground into nearly powder (if I can find it, that is) for how many weeks with bobwhites? And if I can't find any chick feed (game bird, or chicken) that is nonmedicated, what's the next best choice? I don't have access to Purina products.

I'd love any feedback you can give me!

My texas A&M's are due to hatch any day. I have 3 eggs for sure that are developing. The P.O. scrambled most of them. I also have buttons hatching in the next few days.

Anyway, I just got 3 pharoahs from an auction. I was told by the man that brought them that the males' breasts are solid, and the females are speckled? Is this correct? Going by that I got 2 females and 1 male, but I just wondered if this is right. Some sites I have checked seem to differ, but I can't find much info on the brown pharoahs. It would really stink if I picked out 2 males!! Any help would be appreciated!

The males tend to have a breast that is mostly rust colored, with a few speckles. The females are very speckled, little rust. Feathersite.com has some pictures of them to tell them apart.

Shelly- This is really gross but it works if they are of breeding age.

Get a paper towel, pickup the bird turn it upside down. Holding in one hand place thumb and forefinger on either side of the nasty hole and give it a little squeeze.

If a white foam comes out its a male, if the hole is bigger on one than the other thats the girl she will not foam.

A friend and I split some eggs, hatched them, when I told her what I had read and that it worked, She laughed at me,

made fun of me and then called me over (cuz she wasn't playing with butts) to sex her birds.

Hope this helps and doesn't gross ya too much.
It only works on the coturnix Quail not buttons.

Ewwww not sure I could do that but I might have to try! Thanks for the info -

I absolutely love my coturnix - they are the sweetest birds! Now that they are getting older (4 weeks and 7 weeks), I have a few questions:

The 7 weekers have started laying eggs. I've been giving them the parakeet/canary grit because it is supposed to have added calcium, but is that enough of both the calcium and the grit for them or should I use the grit and oyster shell that I use for the chickens? Are the pieces too big?

What kind of treats do they like? I've found they love chickweed, spinach, hard boiled eggs, but what about any kinds of seeds? Scratch grains?

Their eggs are very pretty, but just how do they get those splotches on there? They look like they are painted on! And does each hen always lay the same speckly egg? This morning I had 3 eggs and they were all different. I think out of 5 birds, 3 are hens but I'm not sure.

I have them in hutches that I built in the basement. Can I move them out to the garage for the winter or would it be too cold for them? What temps can they handle? They are getting stinky even though I clean their trays every other day (they are on 1/2" hardware cloth with a pull out tray. I line the tray with newspaper and pine shavings.)

I have a few people interested in buying the eggs for eating. What would be a decent price per dozen to sell them for?

Sorry for all the questions but thank you!
