Quail hatch. Follow along.

My last hatch, I had 10 make it to the brooder. The last one to hatch had curled toes that appear to have been remedied with the sticky part of a bandage. However, that bird is very slow to develop and appears to be about 1/5 the size of its hatch mates. They're about 2 weeks old now and I frequently see the tiny bird trying to hide under other birds as if they were its mother. I'm not sure if it's the same bird all the time. I hope it starts putting on weight/size because I'd hate to cull it after all it's been through. I'm not sure if I want it to be male or female, but I doubt I'll include it in my breeding program either way.

I have one that is exactly like that except it had splay legs as well. And has now after getting rid of the splayed legs and curled toes has developed wry neck he seems to be getting better so not gonna cull yet.

Update: I lost one quail today . He flew up and got his head stuck in a hole and suffocated himself. He was from the 2nd batch. On a better note daddy and mama quail are still being parents. I'm getting some plants in today so when I finish ill send pics of the updated quail enclosure. (I'll also send pics of the quail family,)

Update: I lost one quail today . He flew up and got his head stuck in a hole and suffocated himself. He was from the 2nd batch. On a better note daddy and mama quail are still being parents. I'm getting some plants in today so when I finish ill send pics of the updated quail enclosure. (I'll also send pics of the quail family,)

I’m so sorry that you lost one. It’s super cool to see that there are quail that are being their foster parent.

Also, the tractor supply I get my feed from isn't selling the feed I need anymore. I was going to order it online but the bags are huge, and I don't need that much feed as they are going to switch to their adult bird feed in about 2 weeks. Should I just switch them to their adult feed now?

@Nabiki I wish I could help more but I'm not sure. I've got the same question for my almost 6 week old quail. When am I able to move them to adult feed? I've got a big bag of chick starter but it wasn't suitable for baby quail. Should I move them to it? It's still got high protein.

They should be fine on that as I assume your raising coturnix? They are already matured at that age.

It depends on your goals for your birds. If you want them to get to their best adult size and health, I would get the bag of feed, then start mixing it with the adult feed in a gradual changeover. It won't hurt them to have the higher protein for a while and gradually weaning them to the lower protein adult feed.

I would move them to adult feed at or around 12- 14 weeks. They will be fully grown by then.
