Quail not laying

I wondered about this too, but I have never found any trace of shells, and never an egg either.

IF I HAD ANY DOUBTS I'D TEST THEM. YOU WONT ALWAYS FIND SHELL REMNANTS.

AS FOR YOUR SEXING... DO A SEARCH HERE FOR BEER SEXING, GRAB 1 OUTTA THE FRIDGE AND HEAD ON OUT TO THE QUAIL PEN

ALTHOUGH THE GOLDENS MAY BE SEXED JUST AS THE BROWNS WERE... BY BREAST FEATHERS, BUT WHITE AND ANY RANGE PATERN? NOPE...

Why would GBS exacerbate the non-laying?

IT WOULD BE A CHANGE... A FELONY OFFENSE OF QUAIL LAW

Oh, I see what you mean. I've been feeding GBS from day one and since they started laying at 7 weeks have been getting pretty much an egg a day from each of the hens so I couldn't figure out why it would be a problem.

To the OP, not all feed is created equal when it comes to protein and quail need more protein than chickens. The GBS I feed is 28%. Perhaps your 22% feed is too low?

I checked it last night when I fed and it is 20%. Guess I'll finish that on my chickens, turkeys, guineas, and Emu and find a higher protein for the quail.
Thanks for all the advice and help!

if you have plain old coturnix its pretty easy to sex by breast colors, males with be rust color'd with no black spots, females will have black spots on their breast(they might even be a little rusty as well, but if spots are presesnt...female)

other then that, watch for crowing and humping

Is it illegal if you don't get caught?

Sounds like you would want to switch to as high of % of protein feed soon. As stated before this will send them into a "I don't like my feed switched so I wil not lay for a while" mode but is really needed. 20 % is good for chickens but bad for quail. Get 28 % if you can because it is cheaper than mealworms.

You may not drink right now but if you go out and watch your pen and find out you have all males......WELL what you will see them doing may lead you to have a drink or two.

Hope you have some egg laying hens in there.
