Hey Binki,

Thank you very much for the picture, now it makes total sense to brace the poor chick in a cup. Thanks for the link to poultry podiatry, it's quite thorough. I tried to google "chick with braces" and good lord it wasn't the result I expected. Then "chicken with braces" led me to some recipes, not really what I was after!

Would you have a link how to make these braces, just like for human babies learning to walk these braces just makes sense!

LOL I can totally relate when I was looking for the picture - NOT what I meant by chick braces xD

That's awesome! Do you have any idea what it could be now after looking through some of the site? Was the chick like this when it hatched? Just never got up?

Hey Binki,
This chick was born standard I suppose. It's a little bit hard to spot when you have 30 of them mucking about. All the chicks were walking fine since birth.

Sadly, that chick developed a massive growth on the shoulder over the past 2 days. It was still lying on the side kicking but this time it was wet of sweat all over. It was then I decided it would be better brown bread then in agony.

Thank you all for your support, without you guys this chick wouldn't have lasted that long.

thanks for your support Jaeg, there were a couple of clues like the massive growth over the shoulder could have been an over filled crop slowly released onto the gizzard. The other issue was that quails don't sweat so it must have fell in the water somehow. Knowing that it couldn't walk then there was a greater risk of drowning in the water container even though it was filled with pebbles.

Yes, we've tried our best with all the searching on Google, the support of BYC, two school kids assisting all feeding times. After a week, the chick has not shown any signs of recovery. Sad for the chick, it's in a much better place now.

I've learned a lot: thanks to BYC! this experience made me stronger and have shared the knowledge with my kids and other quail friends. Poor little chick will contribute to the well being of many others.

Did this bird ever recover? This just happened today with our old
Girl (4yo), she all of a sudden was on her side spinning around trying to get back up on her feet. She’s in a brooder at floor level with 3 chicks (who are all fine), she also isn’t having much “voice/sound” coming out when chirping. She was shaking a bit when I pulled her out but she calmed down. I was thinking maybe a stroke? Other than not being able to stand or walk at the moment she seems fine. No signs of injury. She’s alert and wants to move but can’t stay balanced! But at this point seems like she will need to be hand fed/watered.
Any ideas/help would be appreciated.

FYI, this thread is eight years old, so you are unlikely to get a response.

For your question, though, four years old is quite old for a quail, and it is likely to be age related. If she doesn't show signs of improvement over the next day or two, it might be time to let her go.
