quail panting a LOT

got a jap hen which is panting a lot with mouth open and sometimes eyes closed if i approch she scatters but she seems lazy and does not move about a lot

just checked up and the quail has died i kept them with californian quail and 3 chickens no other quail show sighns of any problems thank god . any on know any diseases which act this fast ? the bird was well in the morning and turned this was when i moved them to breeding pen do you think it was due to stress ?

I am not going to be much help other then I know chickens carry lots of stuff that can kill quail and they shouldnt be kept together. Maybe someone will bring some info on that

I know the heat has been just awful. Most of mine have been panting awful to the point of staying laying down while I reach in to feed. Usually they jump on my arms to find some food. I started putting their water in a deep dish that they can get into and seems to be doing the trick. They can hop into the water to get cooler and to get a drink. Change daily and haven't had any losses yet.

Keeping chickens with quail can be lethal to the quail. Chickens carry diseases that can kill quail. Many times the bird is sick and you don't know it. Birds have a great ability to hide their symptoms right up to death. So keep the quail separate from the chickens.

thanks for that i dont know if it was the chickens that caused this as i had them all running with hens for around a week and then i put em in yesterday and this one just died within 1 hour , if it was the chickens what sort of symptoms are commonly seen in the sick quails . also only one has died and i had 8 running with chickens

Chickens do not have to exhibit any symptoms to be carriers of things. Quail can get respiratory ailments, bacteria's, virus's, many things that you might never see. And not every bird will be effected. I am not saying that this is what your bird died of. But it is never a good idea to mix the two species. Keeping them separate will at least rule out this being the causes of deaths in quail. The panting could also be over heating, an egg stuck in the oviduct, worms in the trachea, some sort of it's own bacteria respiratory ailment, over mated by the male, many things. If the deaths continue, it is always a good idea to have or do a necropsy on the bird to see if you can figure out what was going on inside the bird or birds.

yep that is a very good idea i have separated them from the chickens i believe it was egg bound as they just began laying and that specific hen was not excreating aswell when i sepatated it for an hour
