The leg thing was on here.. Is it if they "ate" the newspaper or just being around it??? There was a few that would get a piece here & there out from under the sheet but I never seen them actually eat it.. Which I'm sure they probably did!!
I use news paper or cheap paper towels from the dollar store to line the bottom of the brooder so it is easy to clean. Don't make it to thick because their feet don't develop on soft bedding like paper shreddings or wood shavings. Their feet don't form right and their legs turn red and then they die. I hope they do better. and clean it once or twice a day or how many times you want it seams you are very motivated for healthy chicks.
Well, wobbly finally passed.. Sounds awful but somewhat a relief.. The quail that can't walk is still living but not going anywhere.. It does drink if you stick a drip to the side of its beak.. It has also pecked at food right in front of it but not sure if it ate.. I looked at its legs & it seems they look the same color as the others.. The pheasants legs are much lighter than the quails.. I also noticed that some now how dark, runny stool.. Could it be from the probiotic, electrolyte & new game bird feed?? None seemed to even noticed the difference in the water or feed when I changed it out.. They eat & drank.. My kids (16 yo boy, 12, 11 & 8 yo girls) are taking this pretty hard.. They said "I don't ever want to raise baby chicks again just to watch them die!"..
I've divided the brooders with cardboard so that the light is half on each side.. I'm reluctant to buy more lights, waterers, feeders or boxes if I'm not going to be able to save them.. It's sad.. I just wonder if the quail that can't stand would pass that disease on or if it's just something wrong with it?? Again, thanks for all the replies.. I'm soooo glad I found this site.. I'd already been crazy if not for your helpful tips & encouragment!!!
Your welcome. I'm sorry that wobbly died. Yes the runny stool is from switching food it's all right though. You are doing it right though as soon as you see a sick chick separate it. I hate when I see one dead or dying it's sad because there is nothing you could have done for them that's why its good to have a lot. But your kids will understand Its just nature doing its thing. Its just survival of the fittest and you are doing a good job I'm shore you are doing your best and that is what counts. I am 20 and I hate seeing them pass to but you get over it everyone is made for a little while. Like when my old quail died I was with her for a very long time but I'm starting to get over it.
It's tough to do two species (especially different sized) at one time, maybe the bigger pheasants and the lack of red light and high protein food were the main causes of what happened to cause aggression/weaken some birds so perhaps now that you're prepared, the next incubation will go a lot smoother...
I'm not sure if this would help them but you could let your kids know that everyone did everything they could and even with some lost, you guys still did a better job for those chicks than in the wild by a long shot
Also quails-101, that's incredible that your quail lived that long... Did you do anything special or? also when did she stop laying?
I just had my "mascot" pass this morning, she was super over mated (I bought her this way) and had a lump on her back and bare patches but would sing/chirp for the babies (and look like a bobble head muppet) as they were growing up when they made their "I'm scared" chirps lol. She spent the last bit of her life with those babies when they were finally big enough - RIP Scraggle Queen and Oakley
Awe, I hate that Binki!! The 2 pheasants don't seem to bother the 3 bully quail that I put with them when I separated them.. They were all bullies & now they don't even bother each other.. Well, a peck here or there is all.. Lol.. All seem to be doing Well!!! Except The pheasant that's bottom was all bloody that one morning.. Well, he's gotten better but, yesterday I noticed there wasn't much poop on the flooring.. Yep, it has the pasty butt.. Which, by the way, I had Never heard of until I Researched this site!!! (THANKS EVERYONE) This little pheasant is the calmest of all & I don't know if I've noticed too late to save him or not.. He's 5 or 6 days old (depending which one he is) lol.. He's not mopeing around or anything.. But, His belly is hard & his skin under the fuzz looks black.. I guess he's really constipated!! I've cleaned him really good with warm water & a wash cloth.. I seen someone say they had to "express" their poo before?? Hum, how exactly do you do that?? While I had it's bottom under the warm trickle of water, I took the cloth & tried massaging the hard belly down toward its bottom.. I could see a little in the opening.. However, I was afraid I'd hurt it because I couldn't tell how much pressure I was using & he's so tiny!! So, is that what they meant by "expressing poo??"
Lost Again.. One thing gets better another thing happens!!
I heard having them sit/stand in warm water can help them poo - relaxes the muscles, might have to do it with a few warm water changes for like 30 mins? I'm not certain but makes sense to me and what I would try but most of them go shortly after soaking it with warm water and cotton pads/qtips, but if your guy isn't going try the standing in warm water and no more feed just water and lay fresh paper towel down so you know if he goes in there
My profile picture is of a baby sparrow that blew off my roof and crawled blind into my garage along with a nestmate hehe and so began my strange adventures as the crazy bird lady I raise, rehabilitate and release baby and injured birds that find me xD
Awe, it's ugly & cute at the same time.. Lol...On the warm water thing how would I get it to stand in water deep enough to touch it's bottom without it falling in & drowning?? I ran the warm water over its bottom from the tap the entire time I was trying to clean it?? I have the electrolytes & probiotics in its water & I grind up the game bird feed.. Do I still need to quit feeding it??
