Quail pen dilema

Thank you all for your pictures and advices, all your cages looks great !

Currently I am still at the stage where a single youtube video can change all my ideas, I just saw videos from a guy on youtube (slightly redneck) and i like his cages, so i'm gonna rethink everything and will get back to you for the next questions !
I think I know who you mean. Can't remember his name. He was a bit hit and miss with his cages but I think he sorted them in the end. I subbed to him then he bit the head off a Quail for the camera. So I stopped watching his vids. Might not be the same person. Anyway good luck with your cages.

What do you think about this ? (16 sqf)

Like the design. It would be better if it were 4' x 8' for 32sq.ft.
If you have the DIY skills, you could build it and add or subtract things you want or don't want/need in the pen.
Here's some pics of some pens I built this past summer. 4' x 8' x 16" I used 2" x 2" treated lumber. 1 sheet 4' x 8' 1/4" plywood, 1" x 1/2" welded wire for the front and back and 1/2" welded wire for the bottom. Roofing is sheet metal. Finished in 2 coats of oil base paint. Legs are 2" x 4" and cut to a comfortable working height for me. Cost wasn't cheap, roughly $300. Better than pre-made and built for my needs.

So, i finnaly choosed my final design.

I will inspire from "Slightly redneck" (his username) quail hutch (on youtube) (Kind of the same as 007Sean.

I like this design easy to clean and accesible to the right height, i can also if i want in the future add a second floor to double my cages. I also like the fact that i get some storage on the top.

Video :

Juste adapted with the swiss laws and regulation :

50 cm in height
50% of the cage is solid floor (sawdust in a tray)
50% is wire

Size will be : 1m x 2m [2 sqm] (~ 3' x~ 6') [21sqf]

Total cost : arround 100$ (and switzerland is VERY expensive)

Will keep you updated and post picture when the weather is better to start the construction.

lol, I have been greatly inspired by Slightly Rednecked as well and plan on making cages like his as well. We do have rats but I have two dogs (large and medium) that will run them off or worse. I also plan on keeping mine in our screened in backyard porch. My only issue now is my wife, she has no idea, lol!!

Wow, that is a nice quail hutch. You can stick the excess males in one side, for meat, and the proper ratio of males to females in the other side for eggs.

I also see in your tag you have extensive gamebird experience, hopefully we can learn from you!

I have my quail in rabbit hutches they do use the ramp. I also put them out in a run on the grass. When it rains or starts getting colder I just cover the front with a tarp. View attachment 1250853
I like these. Seems almost everyone is using same as me! Rabbit hutches! Lol

But I always wondered if they would actually use the ramp! So I never got one with a ramp! But now maybe I will.

We use rabbit hutches too with a little hideaway area and I change the litter all the time and I give them natural leaves from my leaf piles that they absolutely love and they will go crazy for the leaves before touching their food because there is loads of bugs on the leaves.

I was glad to see your note about using leaves and changing litter often! Two questions: (1) do you only use leaves or do you have a layer of another type of bedding underneath, and (2) do you birds stay healthy with this set-up? I use sand, garden soil, wood shavings and dry leaves for bedding. My quails love it, but every now and then I lose a bird due to a disease. I spot-clean about every other day and replace the top layer completely once a week. I'd appreciate your response!

You're unlikely to get a response from the OP. This thread is almost 4 and a half years old and they haven't been on since August, 2019.
