quail pics and cages

Here's a few pics of my waterers......I bought the big hamster water bottles and they worked just fine. Then I realized that the caps fit 2-liter bottles!!!

, no fuss. I keep full bottles of water out there, and just swap out when needed.

I have one of those caps that are for the rabbit water bottles that hardly puts out any water. My other ones do fine but that one will barely do anything. I can't even get any water to come out when I squeeze the bottle. Does anybody know how to fix that? The metal balls inside aren't stuck. That was the first thing I checked. They roll back and forth just fine. No dent or bends in the metal nipple part.

Wish I could help you there, emvickery. One of mine did the very same thing, I never did get it to work right. I kept the bottle, tho, as a replacement. I keep it filled with water with a 2-liter cap on it, for a fast swap-out. I do know, however, that if there is a little dirt, or gunk in the nipple part, it will cause the ball to not work right. You can use a pipe cleaner and reach down in there to scrape gunk out. I soak mine in a little bleach water every now and then. Kills bacteria build up. Very little bleach, don't overdo it. And rinse very, very well. I do the same with the bottles. Good luck.

I don't use those rabbit feeders for anyhting but rabbits and my blue orphington cockerel. Everything else gets in there and thinks they can dust themselves in it and they dump the feed out. I made a feeder out of a orange juice bottle. The kinda square ones. It works better than the feeders from the feed stores. Less waste.

Oh and I finally figured out what was wrong with that nozzle. One of the bearings was stuck after all. I got it unstuck and it's in use. Does anybody know where I can buy just those nozzle ends? I checked our local Co-Op and they sell a kit for almost the amount of the bottle and nozzle.

I don't know where to find just the nozzles. I have found a much bigger bottle that will fit them, tho. You can take the wine bottles with the screw caps and use them. Perfect fit. I have the half-gallon size ones. So much better than having to change out water every day. I used to have to do it twice a day, now it's every 2 days. I use baling wire to attach it to the wire on my cages. If you have wooden sides, you can screw small eyes where you want it, and then drill a hole just a little bigger than the spout on the nozzle. I'll never go back to the messy waterers.

I am using a small rabbit feeder for one of my button cages, It's okay, but they sure do waste alot of food by getting into the feed trough and kicking the feed out.

I have found that my buttons do well with tiny canning jars & hamster dishes for food and water. These canning jars are even smaller than the regular jelly jars. They only hold 1/2 cup. (Normal jelly jars hold one cup.) I happened to have a couple of ceramic hamster dishes and used those in one cage. Pretty much any dish that size works. I do get one or two cages where I have a bit more food waste than others, but it isn't too bad. I am thinking I might get some plastic lids (the type they sell to put on jars for storing dry foods or for putting the jars in the refrigerator). Then, I'll drill some holes in the lid & presto! They won't be able to get their FEET in there to scratch the food out.

I had a bunch of these jars & I'm a fan of making do with what's lying around when I can!
