quail pics and cages

I have found that my buttons do well with tiny canning jars & hamster dishes for food and water. These canning jars are even smaller than the regular jelly jars. They only hold 1/2 cup. (Normal jelly jars hold one cup.) I happened to have a couple of ceramic hamster dishes and used those in one cage. Pretty much any dish that size works. I do get one or two cages where I have a bit more food waste than others, but it isn't too bad. I am thinking I might get some plastic lids (the type they sell to put on jars for storing dry foods or for putting the jars in the refrigerator). Then, I'll drill some holes in the lid & presto! They won't be able to get their FEET in there to scratch the food out.

I had a bunch of these jars & I'm a fan of making do with what's lying around when I can!

Yep, I tryed the plastic/lid methiod ... it was okay, but I had the hole too big or something

Like I said in another post, you have to make sure that the feed level is lower than the openings of the feeder, that way whatever they scratch around has no place to go besides right back in the dish. I use cut-off margarine tubs (the small ones) that I cut down to about 1" tall. I fill it only once a day, so if they scratch any out they just get to look for it themselves. I have one pair that is IN a pair-only setup and they have about 1" of the bottom of a yogurt container for their feed bowl...that is plenty for them, they usually have some left over.

I like using plastic jugs like juice and liquid laundry detergent. I showed how to make these in a previous post somewhere in this thread. There is very little waste. hardly noticable. If a tray is put under it that is just barely larger than the bottom of the jug you will only see a tiny bit of waste if any. Depends on the bird. I noticed that Manchurens are less messy than cortunix or Bob Whites. They hardly poop in their water either. And they aren't flighty. More calm and very nosey.

I have 10 little BW left out of the last batch of 16. A few dropped off here and there but I made a huge mistake by putting them outside in the grow pen and they where so determined to get to the other side with the bigger cortunix birds they didn't get under the light and I lost 2 more. And 5 where near death. Just laying there barely moving so I put them in my jacket pocket and athered up the other hyper little buggers and brought them back inside. I put the nearly dead ones in the hatcher to warm them up and the others in a cage with a heat lamp on them. After a few hours the nearly dead ones perked up. I lost oe in the hatcher and then a few days later I lost one of the bigger ones. I think that may have been to drowning. Not sure, woke up one morning and it was dead. Last night I fixed them up in an aquarium again. I guess these guys will be in the house for a while.
