Quail won’t stop CROWING.

Thanks! Looks so pretty once all the bits are off. I actually started to dry pluck it but when the skin tore I said screw it and went skinless - I don’t care for the skin anyway! We had a small batch (13) and of those we have 5 males after vent checking all of them today, but the remaining two in the pen are quiet as a mouse and much smaller than these three were besides, so they’re being given a free pass for now.

We did it! I cheated and had my partner do the other two. But it’s done! Yipee! My yard is so quiet! And they all came out ok! And I think, even though three isn’t very much, we are gonna fry them up with some eggs and biscuits and a skillet gravy tonight. :)

The kids opted for pizza :p

The final update!

Almost 5 weeks - they hatched around 5/5.

I pulled two out that I know are males and one more that I am pretty sure I saw crow (I managed to get a conjunctival abrasion yesterday which is a fancy word that means I scratched my eyeball so it’s hard to see properly LOL).

There was at least one other one crowing while I was dealing with those three, but they’re being awfully quiet now. I know one of the two creamy colored ones is a boy, but those are the kid’s favorites and I’m hoping with the other three out he’ll settle down.

I should add, while they do occasionally crow (and one night at 1am one of them went off about something, I suspect a cat) they’ve never gone on for half an hour almost non stop like this.

I’m afraid the ones I pulled are tragically not going to make it to 6 weeks. I don’t DO 4am. Not for anything. :tongue I’m sure the neighbors don’t either. I just ordered some poultry shears I saw recommended elsewhere and they’ll be here this afternoon. I’m hoping 1 week won’t make much difference here or there, we’re going to skin and spatchcock them anyway because I’ve only ever cleaned fish and even that was a very long time ago.
Appetizers!!!! 😂 Seriously though..... @Nabiki has a great processing article on here complete with pics etc. there are others too. I can pm you our videos if you’d like.

Ooops I guess I should have read further!!! 😂. Congrats! Great JOB!!!

Just for future reference.....we tend to cut the legs off and package them separately to fry for breakfast. The use the breasts for dinners in a variety of recipes like stuffed with a fresh jalapeño and cream cheese, wrapped in bacon and smoked. We’ve also done fried, rotisserie, and baked with raspberry reduction sauce.

i had 4 males and 5 females.... once we butchered the 2 extra males, i haven't heard the other 2 crow in like 3-4 weeks.... just one crow today when i was working with some tools next to the shed.
