Question about alfalfa

I bought a compressed bale of Alfalfa from TSC. I was giving them a flake or two a week.
I ran out of compressed straw that i use for bedding and decided to use the compressed Alfalfa. It doesn't make a good bedding material. Lots of stems. So I mix it with pine shavings till gone. So they get plenty Alfalfa in the coop. I bought a bale of Orchard grass and Timothy hay. I will try it when the Alfalfa is gone. I want them to have some greens during winter. GC
If you use timothy or orchard grass, it helps to chop it up into short pieces. Prevents crop problems later down the road.

That green wrapped 50lb bale is crapola, the 20lb white ready to eat bag is perfect, short cuts no big stems fluffs up nice!

The alfalfa isn't as much of a problem, because the stems tend to be crunchy and they break down when birds eat them. Mostly, my birds ignore the stems though, lol. Timothy especially, is more like long grass that you'd get from mowing a lawn, its not crispy.

That green bale, though the stems are crazy long and not as crunchy as i'd be ok with. The fact that it is a pain in the butt to handle does not help, has I think three tight, much tougher than they got to be purple bands binding it and it is so compressed you've got to peel off layers and beat them to death to puff them up. Top it off, I got all kinds of thorns in my hands they throw some briars in for free. That white bag, tear it open and just spread, fluffy flakes of greenery some alfalfa blooms, once I even got a really funky looking grasshopper in there. TSC can keep that green wrapped torture hay, the only upside is it has a carry handle....oh boy! :lau

We got 20 tons delivered on December 11th! Ours was mostly briar free but in 100 &100+ lb bales... just looking at the loaded semi I almost got a hernia!
Yea, I have a cow and goats, so get the small square "real bales" for the stock. That's the way to go IMO.

I bought a 50 pound bag of the cubes and I soaked the cubes, they were not thrilled. Now I have 50 pounds of alfalfa
There is a fairly local feed mill (couple hours away) that blends scratch with alfalfa pellets in it. I've noticed the same thing, the birds aren't as into the pellets as they are the loose hay. That alfalfa sure keeps the yolks dark in winter though, plus It's got a decent amount of calcium in it!
