Hi everybody,

I have been looking around online but haven't been able to find info on the coloring of one of my quail chicks -

the chicks are all from silver lines but one of my probable females has a dark back, will this change with her juvenile feathers or would the chick be classified differently? They are 5 weeks old now.

Thanks in advance!

Edit: forgot to mention they are Chinese quail, and we are in the Netherlands 😁

Beautyful bird 😍

Inheritance of color mutations at Chinese Blue's is a bit different from Japanese Quails.
I am not that experienced in that, but I would say it is a dark Silver Pie. At this stage I'll cannot say if it is masked or unmasked.
I also cannot say, how the plumage will change at mature.

Here is an example of an unmasked silver pearled pie.

As said before, Chinese Quails inherits diffrently to Coturnix and I am not experienced in it.

If it would have been a Japanese Quail, I would also say, that it is a SSC Pie.

Never the less, welcome to BYC... great community here :celebrate

I did a little, quick research, as I also wanted to breed Chinese Blues/ Button Quails and maybe will do some day ....
... found this in a hurry:

Seems that in the US your teenager chick's color is called "Slate Splashed".

Also you may take a look to this old thread about Chinese Quails on BYC:

On page 4 there is a post of crossing colors.

Wow thanks, I appreciate it!

Now I have something to go on 😊👍
