Question about duck eggs

I don't have ducks but I have bought duck eggs at swaps occasionally. I've never had a problem using them in recipes and having "too much" egg, but then the duck eggs I buy tend to be the same size as an extra large chicken egg from the store. I will, after learning from experience, not use a soiled duck egg. With chickens it doesn't seem to be a problem, but any duck eggs that had kind of nasty shells seem to taste off even if cleaned off. I couldn't tell you why.
