Question About Eggs

You're welcome :) The steaming time just depends on how well done you want them. The length of time needed is the same as when you boil them. Egg shells are porous so steaming them allows oxygen to get into the shell to separate the membrane from the shell. That membrane is what makes it hard to peal fresh boiled eggs. When the eggs are fresh, the membrane sticks to both the egg and the shell. This is also the reason that older eggs are easier to peel. The older (store bought) eggs have sat around long enough to allow oxygen to pass through the porous shell and loosen the membrane.

You are a blessing Karen, and so nice to learn something new!! Thank you again so much!!! : D

Hello Everyone!! View attachment 1653247 I was wondering if anyone knows why the white part of the egg tends to stick to the shell when they are hard boiled? Doesn't seem to happen to store bought eggs, which I never like to buy anymore. Is there a secret to keep the whites from sticking? Thank you so much and be good to your chickens!! Boil in salt water, and then cool with cold water, works great, shell comes right off.

You are more than welcome. :hugs90 percent of everything I know about chickens, I have learned here. :celebrateGood luck with yours :thumbsup

Thanks for the well wishes! Everyone here seems so nice and has good information to share. Wanted to ask, how much salt do you use? I would like to the 3 methods that people were kind enough to provide, and salt would probably be the thing that I would have most on hand. I don't use very much salt on when I cook.

I hate salt, I don’t salt anything. I use about 3-4 teaspoons with a dozen eggs, once the water boils, boil for 15 min. Either run really cold water over them for about 15 min or drain and put in fridge til cooled. Hope it works as well for you.

Aww, thank you so much Stacy! I'm still learning about so many things... Still trying to find someone to build me an insulated coop or find one on line, but so far, it's been a frustrating adventure. I know that things will work out though and one day the chickens will have a castle. :p Lots of love and best wishes to you...

Thank you. :hugsI built my chicken coop out of pallets, I stuff them with straw and then covered with weed barrier. I also used a child’s plastic playhouse for my silkie coop. I’ll post pics tomorrow. :frow
