Question about feeding chicks in mixed flock

I always keep my feed in the bag it came in. But, I put the bag in a trash can with a tight fitting lid. That way, I'm not mixing new feed with old, and if there are ever any grain mite or other insect contamination issues, it's most likely limited to a single bag. And, if there are ever any problems with a particular bag, I have that bag, the lot number and all of the information so I can take it back. I've had to return bags of feed on several occasions, and the store is very good about replacing defective feed.

Thanks, again everyone.

I used to use a meal to make a type of bread with lots of veggies and stuff for my parrots, so I thought of that in future. But I guess just making a paste is easy.

Problem was that we got only 3 hens at first, and 50# feed + 50# scratch. It was just waaayyyy too much. I've never kept fewer than 25-30 at a time so I've never had feed just get old before it got eaten. The scratch ended up crawling with bugs too before it was half eaten. They only like the whole grains in it anyway so I might just start buying whole grain again, though I will probably need someone to split the feed with. Funny, I used to buy several hundred pounds of mixed feeds every week (not just poultry) ... now I can't even use up a few bags.

I plan to keep using my plastic bins, but thanks for the idea of just keeping the bag inside the bin. It's slightly less convenient, but it works.

Thanks again.
