What kind of chickens do you have? Some of them do have beautiful eggs.

I'm pretty sure they are Black Copper Marans and the eggs we've gotten have ranged from light brown to dark chocolate brown with speckles. We were actually given these chickens back in May, which is the reason I am unsure about their breed.

There's a BYC section where you can ask about your chicken breeds.

(I for one don't know much about breeds though.)
Ooh, I've never seen dark chocolate brown eggs. They would be pretty.

I was just looking at the page! I have to take some good pictures soon. They really are pretty birds and very adventurous.

Anywhere up to five days, I'd say. We've eaten five day old eggs before, and it's a LOT hotter in Australia than 50*F!

The bad ones, I think, float if you put them in water.

Very true good test but its better safe than sorry. If I found an egg and I wasn't sure when it was laid I would probably get rid of it.

We usually do that too.

Although my father, the no-waster of the family, likes to eat things that might not be exactly... fresh anyway.

He's still with us, so it can't have been that bad.
