We recently got some young female chickens. We got them a few hours ago, the guy who had plans to give them to us dropped them off with no notice and our coup is not compleatly finished.

My question is how long can I safely keep them in the large enclosed dog crate we currently have them in. There's enough room for them to move around, more so than the boxes they arrived in and there's space for water and food. I just want to know how long is it ok to keep them in there before we must make more room. I do have an old baby play pen I could get them set up in if that would work better

I'm not sure how old they are, they are about phesant size maybe a bit smaller.I just switched them over to the playpen so they have much more room now. Not sure how large the playpen is but it's about your avarage one I guess. We don't think it will take long. we just have to vent the coup, put hinges on the door and wrap the bottom of the fence to keep them in and other things out. We are currently batteling crazy heat so it's hard to do much for long

WE are new to all of this and things just got started before we were ready but we have food and bedding and all that stuff

If you post a picture of your chickens I bet the experienced folks will be able to tell at a glance approximately how old they are. That would help you figure out how long the crate will work for a coop.

Congrats on your new chickens! I'm new too, but it has been really exciting and rewarding!

Get busy building, lol! Those birds are at the point now where they need to be up and out of a brooder setup and into a nice coop. In the meantime, get them outside for some field trips and play time so they don't get too stir crazy in their temp quarters. Being confined and full of energy can cause them to start expending that energy in some ways you don't want.
