Question about rooster 'gameness'

I don't really buy the idea that it is the humans fault. This is when, as AARt says, the romance hits the reality. And as you have found out, rooster attacks are more violent than many people think.

I vote reconsider the soup pot. If you like this breed, that is fine, just cause this one is a no go, does not mean that all roosters of this breed are this way. Contact some poultry clubs, and get a good rooster.

If you have small children, I strongly recommend letting this rooster go.

I will keep my responses to this thread very minimal. Game fowl are behaviorally more flexible than other domestic chicken breeds. That flexibility makes possible the management to control many behaviors which I do frequently. The limitation will be from being a novice are being too bone headed to make changes in rooster management.

There is a nature and nurture component to problems like this. Many poultry keepers seem more limited on their side where nature controls the human side too much.

roosterhavoc, I think I may have inadvertently gotten between him and a new girl he was trying to romance, she ran past me as I was walking, he may have thought I was blocking his pursuit. He had been dancing for the hens all day, I just let him do his thang, fertile eggs are what I'm after. I think you're right, and I'm kinda in favor of letting him be in charge, some eggs and another layer of protection from predators in return for all the ladies he wants is the bargain I'm hoping for. I don't need him to like me, just let me do my business.

Hey, centrarchid, thanks for posting!

I'm more than willing to learn the animal behaviors of those I utilize. I like to interfere as little as possible, while providing the right environment to fulfill their potential.

I'll be moving to some fresh acreage soon to homestead, and was narrowing down breeds I want to include, I've got my fluffy helpless egg machines picked out, then I inherited this rooster and his two hens. I'm so impressed by the gamefowl's foraging, mothering instinct and alertness. I prize self sufficiency in all my animals. I had no idea there were non-needy chickens out there and I'm thrilled! If gamefowl and I can come to an understanding about random attacks, I will be jumping into the breed.

Now you know all my behaviors, haha! Which way do you recommend I proceed? And do you have favorite books, articles , or websites I should be reading about gamefowl behavior?

I have a Jersey black giant rooster that is just plain mean. I didn't start it with him he's just mean. He'll take a beating and keep coming. I can't believe that rooster still alive, I just can't get rid of him. I guess I like having him around .

What's confusing is, why did he happily ignore me for two weeks then turn combative? Is it hormones? The game girls are laying, so maybe spring has sprung

He will be fine for a while and not Square Off With Me , but when he wants to try and take me he will. I've tried to dominate him ,but he still wants to fight no matter what I do.

So glad I’m not the only one with rooster trouble, though he was very none aggressive with me earlier when I gave him and his ladies bananas that were covered in theyr regular food along with some seed they enjoyed it a lot.
