Question about shipped chicks...

Quote:
I'm in Kentucky and I ordered from Meyer Hatchery in Ohio, which is about 5.5 hours away from me. They were also express shipped to me, so I got both shipments in less than 24 hours.

If you're able to get a different rep, they may know where to 'look', so to speak. They should be able to at LEAST tell you if they shipped. ANY company should be able to tell you that, regardless of what you ordered.

I don't know about McMurray, but our recent batch from MyPetChicken.com arrived about 18 hours after being shipped. You should definitely call your local PO to make sure they are looking out for your babies. We called the same day to give them our names/phone numbers we could be reached at. I received the call from my local PO at 10:01AM the next day. Slightly off topic, but important: Make sure you have the glucose water mixture ready for them ASAP because they are sure to be thirsty by the time you get them home. The recipe I used was 3 TBSP of regular white sugar per quart or water, and make enough to last them 3 days. Good luck and post pics when your babies arrive!

I didn't do sugar water. There were people on here that advised against it, but I DID do apple cider vinegar. The batch I got yesterday just got plain water. Call me paranoid, but I worry about sugar water under a heat lamp.

I understand the paranoia because it can be a breeding ground for bacteria. We have a fairly large (5 foot across) kiddie pool in our sunroom and keep the glucose water on the opposite side from the heat lamp. I'd not heard about the apple cider vinegar... a little late for our girls, though. We'll be putting them on regular water tomorrow evening. Take care!

I ordered my chicks from MPC, not McMurray. However, I suspect most hatcheries have similar procedures.

1) Call your PO and let them know you have chicks coming and the possible dates, and make sure they have your phone number(s); ask them what time they normally get live chicks in
2) The shipping box containing the chicks should have your phone number (the one you gave McMurray as a contact number) written in large numbers on the box
3) Do not venture far from your phones on the day(s) you expect to receive your chicks
4) My PO said they may call me as early as 5:30am; they were kind, however, and waited until 7:30am to call me
5) Make sure your brooder is up to temperature and water and food are ready for your little peepers

I'm excited for you! There's nothing like picking up a box of peeping little fuzzy butts!
