Question about showing, more towards 4H level

My daughter has decided she wants to show chickens and ducks next summer for 4H. We are haveing a hard time finding all the info we need, but so far found out that the birds have to be hatched out before April ? Would we be better off getting chicks now instead of in the spring? Also she is really wanting to show pairs, for Ducks she has chosed Blue Swedish and for chickens she wants Americauna Bantums. Does anyone have any pros or cons for those breeds? Or suggestions for a better breed/ Also any tips would be appreciated! Thank you

I really can't help you with the 4-H part of your question other than send you this link to the ABA's Youth program.
I know that Doris Robertson has done an amazing job of putting together information to help kids get started and continue with their Exhibition Project's.

Almost makes me want to have more kids so that maybe they would want in on all the fun, but my wife is not having any of it. I may have to adopt................
