Question about using oxine on growing sprouts.

That looks awesome! It is too cold here to sprout sunflower seeds outside. Hopefully the basement will work. I have an extra plastic container I'll use. I'm actually going to experiment using sandy soil right out our backyard. We've had sunflowers grow right in our sandy soil by the bird feeders. My chickens absolutely love sunflower sprouts. They fight for them when they find them in the yard like it's a worm.lol

Thanks. I'd never activate the oxine. I've heard it is dangerous, so I never bought the crystals that activate it. I do love the oxine product! We use it once a week inside the coop to clean the roosts, nest boxes and walls. I've read that people had problem with mold, maybe they are letting their sprouts sit too long in the first place? I will keep an eye on them.

Probably they are. Cleaning the sprouter and keepign them rinsed really should prevent any problems. I've been sprouting for years and never have had mold on them.

I use burlap sacks and allow them to sprout for 4 days. I sprout mine inside too. I never have to rinse the burlap keeps them moist enough to sprout. There are pics of how I do it in the sprouting thread. I'll see if I can find it.

188, hope it helps. Other methods are discussed in that thread too.

Your method looks very efficient and makes more sense than using sprouting jars...especially if it's for the chickens. Just give them a new sack every day. I'm very impressed by the level of care you give to your chickadees.
