Question about when my chicks start laying

Once my chicks are outside and old enough to start laying what type of bedding should I use on their nesting boxes? I use pine shavings for their brooder and plan on using them for their coop. So do I need something different for the nesting boxes?

Not necessarily. Many use the pine shavings, but I've also seen people who use a shallow bed of straw as a nice cozy spot for them to lay.

When I started 4 years ago I used straw in the nests, but I eventually switched to pine shavings. Straw holds it shape better but isn't as absorbent.
Nest boxes will need a lip around 4 inches high to keep shavings inside.

I use wood shavings as they're easy to get and provide a decently clean nest for eggs. Straw is an option, or even sand.

I also use pine shavings. Works like a dream.

I use both and I let the hens decide. Surprisingly, most prefer to use the nests with straw or chopped dried grasses (not lawn grass).
