What is the shelf life of yeast? I have some bulk containers of yeast in my fridge that have been in there for some time and I was wondering if they are any good. They have pretty much been kept in the fridge the entire time. Is there a way to test and see if it still works?

Thanks!

You can put a teaspoon of yeast in 1/2 cup warm (115 degree) water with a little sugar and dissolve. Wait 10 minutes and see if it's bubbling and "working".

I also buy bulk yeast. But I store it in the freezer and get out a small jar at a time to store in the fridge for regular use. I've never had any go bad. On average, it probably stays in the freezer up to 3 or 4 months. Less in Summer when the farmers markets are busy and I'm selling more breads.
