Question for those of you who use wool hens

Those temps are the same that my newly hatched chicks used my wool hen, so at a week they will be perfectly fine.
Seeing them accessing food and water and returning to the wool hen is important.

I haven't seen them come out yet, but I just went in to check on them, and they are making soft cooing sounds. When the baby lays down for a nap I'm going to sit with them a little while and watch.

I do agree with Kiki that those temps and at that age should be fine, in general. A wool hen is a good transitioning heat source, - costs nothing and provides we humans with reassurance that they are ok :)

Two hours later they still hadn't come out, though they were warm to the touch in there, so I went ahead and put a heating pad in the brooder instead, and they immediately started eating. Though I'm still concerned with the risk. I definitely need to find a bigger brooder box though.

That’s good. Now you know that they are fine :) This experience will guide you in the future and make things less of a worry :thumbsup

I wouldn't think twice about using the heating pad, from what I found out a heating pad doesn't get hot enough to be deadly from teflon what evers.

So it doesn't get too hot from being left on all the time? That's my biggest worry, is overheating or the fact that it's partially on the bedding, but right now I only have it on 3 until I figure out if they want it warmer.

I only use my heating pad on the lowest setting.
Do you have a thermometer or two?
You could put one up against your heating pad to see what temp it gets up to.

I don't think it continues to keep getting hotter the longer it is on.

Yeah. I just put the thermometer on the top....or should it be under where the chicks are? They still haven't come out that I know of but I put their food next to the cave and I've seen them eating it at least.
