Question of the Day - Monday, March 25th, 2024

Did you 'feel' the crowds moving through there, or am I just weird?
Yes!

Our trip to both Ellis and the Statue were on the same day, a school day, and NO field trips were there. Both places were nearly empty.

The Statue was cool, no denying that. But Ellis Island was ... memorable? touching? poignant? heart wrenching?

There was DEFINITELY a sense of people there. All those souls, searching for a better life.

Some of the displays (large photographs, mounted and hung on the wall) were exactly what hubby and I did at the photo lab where we worked. (No, we didn't make any of the ones there.) So something that took a bit of "edge" off the sadness was looking at the quality of the display and critiquing it. ("Look at all the dust spots in that print!" "Oh, see the Newton rings on this one?")

I was 10 when I visited Ellis. Didn't do a lot for 10 year old me. I think that it would be a much more memorable experience for me now, knowing more the history of the place and about my own family's passage through those doors.
