I'm all about pure-breds bred to the breed standard. I own a gorgeous Norwegian Fjord who comes from a long line of champions (
http://www.nfhr.org/ponyweb/ponyweb.cgi?horse=200450&HorseName=cof sigaurd&Page=1&Sort=0 ) Two British Shorthair cats (long lineage of champions), and our Pem Corgi comes from parents that have titles in the breed ring, agility, and obedience. We like nice looking animals. I want a pet that looks like the vision in my head.
Form follows function. Up until the point that
form becomes the goal...not function. Then you really start to lose. You lose function AND you lose the original look of the breed.
A couple of examples (one's I'm familiar with). I love Arabians...always have. I love the heads that look dry as the desert and carved from stone. They are gifts of beauty:
This horse can breath well...and could run for hours in the desert.
This one...not so much:
Don't see the difference? Let's take a look at bulldogs - just for fun!
Good dogs! Can't give birth, though....we've made those massive shoulders that use to help hold on to a rank bull. even bigger! If big is good...well, then bigger should be better!...Now, compliments of enthusiastic breeders, bulldogs just don't fit through the space they need to come out. In the breed world, each litter is a c-section
Check out what breeders have done to Basset Hounds. Impressive! I'm not sure how they'd hold up to hunting these days - but your interpretation of the standard is...well...hmmmm....
Don't even get me started on what breeders have done in the breed ring to GSD (German Shepherds)...the poor things can't even walk. If you really love GSD what the breeders have done must break your heart. This is no lie nor an exaggeration....take a look:
I'm just pointing out that breeders can do good & are important for maintaining type. But they often elevate themselves above others for so long that they no longer have anything that really resembles the orginal breed. They are often defensive of their actions and do not sell their offspring to the common folk without a great deal of trouble and expense.
I'm not knocking it! I paid plenty for all my purebreds because I am a little vain & I want nice looking pets. I sign contracts, I will pay a lot of money for quality and health. I only buy from distinguished, reputable breeders...and I buy the best I can. But I stop short many times because of the extremes.
I was very surprised to find this among chicken people! I guess I shouldn't have been...but I was. I want chickens to look like the breed standard...but not at the cost of egg production. If I want something just for beauty - and nothing else, I guess I'd buy a painting
