I'm not about to get into a animal vs plant protein since I really don't care. However, I've been keeping chickens for a long time and have had good results by going starter-> grower->layer for eggs and just substituting finisher for meaties. This has been supplemented with excess produce, kitchen and meat scraps when available plus free ranging for part of the year. The hens get oyster shell and scratch grain during the winter. All my birds turned out very well.
BTW I've last paid $11.75 for 50lbs of Nutrena starter/grower(20%), Purina(18%) was $12.50 for same size. Both say plant protein and chicks are growing at the normal rate.
