For the counter view:
Having seen some of my co-workers over the years go on mood altering drugs------I'm convinced they create more problems then solving.
When I get depressed and lethargic, I go work in the garden in the fresh air and sunshine.
When I get sad, I grab a beer and watch the chickens in the run, I usually start laughing soon.
When I get upset, I grab a box of 22LR and go plinking, each box is worth 5 hours at the head shrinkers.
When I get bored, I'll do something for the chickens, collect nesting materials, litter, or collect treats. Taking a few squash from the garden and smashing them in the pen for the chickens to eat works wonders.
When I get too happy, I'll butcher a chicken and fix a full course meal over several hours---keeps me doing constructive actions.
