Questions for my duck run!?!?!

okay, i will be getting 3 ducklings today and im looking at kiddie pools to put in the run for them to use, i imagine the run will become muddy if i leave just dirt as the ground cover so im wondering if i can put rocks/pebbles around the pool to keep the water and surrounding area less muddy and possibly keep the water clean? new to ducks so any advice would be great!!!

I have pea gravel around the ducks' pool in the run and wood mulch in my backyard around their kiddie pool. Both work fine. But I will say I live in a dry climate so I don't need to worry about the wood getting moldy. I believe there are some folks that use pavers.

We have pea gravel around the ducks ponds and it works very well for draining the water. It is also very easy to hose down any poop, which keeps the area nice and clean.
